I have to get up, Kieli thought in a panic, but she couldn’t lift her head.

She wanted to stand right up and say something like, “Ah-ha-ha, I missed my step. Sorry for scaring you like that,” but her body was stuck tightly to the ground, as if sewn in place, and she simply couldn’t move.

Her field of vision was pitch-black. She couldn’t see a thing. But she could sense that Harvey was nearby. The instant she thought so, a dull light rose on the other side of her eyelids, and in the hazy space it created, she could see the back of a copper-colored head. He sat on the floor, looking down and playing with his lighter in his left hand. It was a gesture she had seen from time to time. She remembered he had a habit of doing that when he was losing at cards.

I have to get up.

She thought she needed to hurry and get up and put his mind at ease. See, look? I’m fine. I’m fine, so you don’t…

So you don’t have to look like you’re going to cry.

His gaze was as empty as always as he contemplated his lighter, and he didn’t really look at all as if he was going to cry. For some reason, though, the thought came naturally.
